Commissioned by Volkskunde Vlaanderen (Folklore Flanders) Nick Hannes travelled through his own country in 2009 and 2010 to photograph traditions and popular customs. He was asked to investigate how traditions are interpreted today. Diversity was more important than completeness. Mundane, religious or private, small-scale or universal, unknown or Unesco-recognized, Flemish, Turkish, Chinese or Jewish, Hannes' documentary has not become a catalogue, but rather a sample of very diverse rituals and customs in Flanders.
