Saddam (2003-2004)

After the fall of Saddam Hussein in march 2003 the victorious face of the leader suddenly disappeared from street corners and squares. Furious Iraqis let off steam by ruining his omnipresent portraits and statues. Assisted by the Americans, Saddam was burned, stained, shot, desecrated and reduced to a pile of rubble. Some images however mutated into subtle artworks as if Rene Magritte, Jackson Pollock or the dadaists had intervened. They became rare icons of a regime of a dictator who has lost his face.
